Review: Miles Kane :: Change The Show

Dwelling in, well, the shadow of his more glamorous friends seemed to be Miles “Shadow Puppet” Kane’s destiny for a long time. He left his indie rock band The Rascals to pursue a solo career. Unfortunately, nobody was very interested in his debut solo single “Inhaler” (2010). So it goes.

The string-loving baroque-rock side project The Last Shadow Puppets is doing a lot better, but somehow it’s all about his buddy Alex Turner, frontman of the Arctic Monkeys. On Lana Del Rey’s most recent album BLUE BANISTERS (2021), Miles Kane gets to play stirrup in the “Dealer” duet, allowing Ms. Del Rey to then snap out in the song in an attention-grabbing way, like we’re in a Tennessee Williams Southern tragedy. Always standing in the shadows – that can’t be, Miles Kane must have thought too, who doesn’t call his new record “The Show Must Go On” but CHANGE THE SHOW. There you are!

And after the predecessor COUP DE GRACE (2018) didn’t know where he was going, Kane has now even found a sound that suits him: glam rock, which is in the British tradition (it has something of the young Elton John, only without piano), but also clearly flirts with the American Motown sound, especially in the uptempo numbers suitable for the dance floor. Miles Kane pulls it off nicely this time − unfortunately with the disadvantage that the songs come and go interchangeably after a while, without any big hits standing out.
