World number one Daniil Medvedev easily reached the round of 16 at the lawn tournament in Halle, Westphalia. The German double Krawietz / Mies is already in the quarterfinals.

Russian tennis pro Medvedev won 6-3, 6-2 against Belgian David Goffin on Wednesday. The 26-year-old only needed 64 minutes for his success on Wednesday. In the fight for the quarter-finals, Medvedev will now meet Ilja Ivashka from Belarus on Thursday, who had won against Warsteiner Jan-Lennard Struff at the start.

Tsitsipas fails at Kyrgios

Medvedev replaced Serbian Novak Djokovic at the top of the world rankings earlier in the week. “It was a great match. David is a difficult opponent. It was good that I played on grass last week,” said Medvedev, who reached the final in ‘s-Hertogenbosch last week. There, however, he had lost against Dutch outsider Tim van Rijthoven 4:6, 1:6.

For the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, number two on the seed list behind Medvedev in Halle, on the other hand, was the last stop in the round of 16. After winning the first set (7:5), he lost 2:6 and 4:6 to Australian Nick Kyrgios, who had knocked out Daniel Altmaier (Kempen) in the previous round.

Krawietz/Mies win German duel with Otte/Altmaier

Defending champion Ugo Humbert has already been eliminated. The Frenchman, who surprisingly won the title in Halle in 2021, had to admit defeat to Hubert Hurkacz from Poland 6: 7 (5: 7), 3: 6 in the round of 16. Like Hurkacz, Pablo Carreno Busta is in the quarterfinals. The Spaniard won against the American Sebastian Korda 6:4, 0:6, 6:3.

In the round of 16 of the doubles competition, there was a purely German encounter, which the two-time French Open winners Andreas Mies and Kevin Krawietz won. After losing the first set (6:7), they defeated Cologne’s Oscar Otte and Kempen’s Altmaier 6:3 and 10:8.

Otte is the only German professional in the round of 16 in Halle. After his opening win over the Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic, he will play against the Georgian Nikolos Bassilashvili on Thursday. The two-time finalist Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) had canceled his participation due to injury.
