Marcelo’s farewell to Champions League winners Real Madrid is now official. As the Spanish soccer champions announced, the captain will say goodbye after 15 years in the Royal jersey at a press event on Monday, where he is also supposed to give a farewell speech.
The Brazilian left-back (34) had already announced his departure after his fifth triumph in the premier class on May 28 against Liverpool (1-0).
Since signing up in 2007, Marcelo has also won four club world championships, six Spanish championships and two Spanish cups with Real. His contract, which expired this season, was not extended. In his last season, Marcelo played a total of 18 competitive games for Real.
During the final against Jürgen Klopp’s Reds, the 34-year-old sat on the bench, but as captain played a major role in Madrilenians’ 14th premier class win. In the weeks before, he had repeatedly expressed the hope of being able to extend his contract in Madrid again.
“The feelings are overwhelming, this was my last game with Real Madrid but I’m very happy,” said the Brazilian after the game at the Stade de France. He didn’t want to reveal anything about his future: “Now I’ll celebrate with my family and my teammates, and then we’ll see. Now I want to enjoy it. You’ll find out soon enough.”
