Now the last coaching chair in the Bundesliga is occupied: FC Augsburg have signed Enrico Maaßen from Borussia Dortmund II: The contract has not yet been signed, but the verbal agreement is in place.
FC Augsburg has found a successor for Markus Weinzierl. Enrico Maassen will look after the Swabians in the future. According to BR information, the Bavarian Bundesliga club pays BVB 300,000 euros plus bonuses for the 38-year-old. So far, however, there has been no confirmation from BVB, but the change is on the home stretch, it said. A contract for three years is under discussion. FC Augsburg initially did not comment on this either. The change of coach should be officially confirmed by both clubs later in the day, as the German Press Agency learned from negotiating circles. Maassen will start working with the team on June 20th.
The former Augsburg coach Weinzierl announced his farewell live on television shortly after the final whistle on the last Bundesliga matchday. “For me, it’s the right decision not to have any more talks,” said the former Schalke coach after the 2-1 win at home against SpVgg Greuther Fürth on May 14.
Maassen’s change had become apparent since last weekend. First media reports, according to which the obligation is as good as fixed, Dortmund’s designated sports director Sebastian Kehl initially denied and showed himself irritatedt. Now the deal seems closed.
Third division promoted with Borussia Dortmund II
Maaßen, who was born in Wismar in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, has been in charge of BVB’s U23s since the summer of 2020 and managed to get promoted from the regional league to the 3rd division with the talented players. This season, the team ended up there in ninth place. Maassen previously worked as a coach at SV Drochtersen/Assel and SV Rödinghausen. During his active career as a player, Maassen was active in the regional league, among other things.
