Mayor opens pedestrian bridge that immediately collapses again: eight injured | Abroad

The suspension bridge with wooden planks for the floor and metal chains along the sides was recently renovated. Mayor José Luis Urióstegui was given the task of rededicating the bridge. The ceremony was attended by many local officials, including city councilors from the city just south of Mexico City, and local press.

Videos circulating on social media show a large group of people walking across the bridge. The bridge hangs over a stream. Suddenly the metal planks on one side of the bridge become detached from the metal and the ground sinks straight away. The people standing on the bridge at that moment all fall down about three meters and land hard on the stony surface.

Eight people had to go to hospital for treatment. Many suffered from broken bones, according to Enrique Clemente, head of the state civil defense office. The mayor’s wife and several reporters, among others, are said to have been standing on the bridge at the time of the collapse. The mayor himself was unharmed.

The walkway was part of a walk along one of the city’s many streams.
