Steven Bergwijn wants to leave Tottenham Hotspur ‘now’ – praise from van Gaal

Rumors of Ajax return

Steven Bergwijn is unhappy with his status as a backup player under Antonio Conte and is targeting a departure from Tottenham Hotspur. The winger has made 23 appearances since the Italian’s arrival last November but has only started twice, playing 397 minutes out of a possible 2,070. The transfer of Ivan Perisic (33), who comes from Inter Milan on a free transfer and also plays on the left flank, should not have a particularly positive effect on Bergwijn’s chances.

His training club Ajax Amsterdam is said to be interested in the 24-year-old, who is contractually bound to Spurs until 2025. The Eredivisie champions had already been linked with Bergwijn in the last transfer period, but didn’t want to spend 18 million euros. “I wasn’t allowed to leave Spurs in the winter and I didn’t cause any problems. In the last few months, however, I was hardly cared for there. Now I want to play somewhere regularly. It’s about my situation now, that has to change,” said the Dutch international in an interview with the “Algemeen Dagblad“.

Tottenham paid PSV Eindhoven €30m for the left winger’s services in January 2020, making him one of the five most expensive signings in the club’s history. Estimated at 35 million euros at the time, its market value has steadily fallen since then and is currently at 18 million euros.

Bergwijn quickly wants “clarity” about the future: “It is important that I play”

He has not yet made contact with the new Ajax coach, ex-Hoffenheimer Alfred Schreuder, as they currently want to focus on the national team, where he scored in the 4-1 win over Belgium on Friday. However, Bergwijn is striving for “clarity” soon. “I just have to start playing. I want to leave Spurs now, that’s clear. Is it important that my new club play in the Champions League? It’s not even a top priority, although it would be nice. The important thing is that I play.” But the Amsterdamers are not his only option: “There are several clubs.”

Bonds coach Louis van Gaal meanwhile put his protégé in a row with Dutch football greats: “When Bergwijn plays like it did against Belgium, he is on an equal footing with Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie – with more speed,” praised van Gaal at a press conference. “He’s the lynchpin, doesn’t give up the ball and still scores goals. What more could you want?”
