After the draw in Italy, many DFB players are dissatisfied. Coach Hansi Flick also expressed criticism – and hopes for a clear increase in performance.
The German national team started the new Nations League season 1-1 at European champions Italy. This did not bring satisfaction to the German camp.
“We bought our guts,” national coach Hansi Flick had to admit after the game. The Italians, who are in the process of rebuilding after missing out on qualifying for the World Cup, were the better team for long stretches of the encounter. After a goalless first half, Lorenzo Pellegrini (70′) gave the “Squadra Azzurra” the lead. Only a short time later, Joshua Kimmich (73rd) equalized for Germany.
“This must not happen”
The national coach did not like the way the goal was conceded – after a throw-in, Wilfried Gnonto made German defender Thilo Kehrer look old and crossed into the middle. DFB central defender Niklas Süle was unable to clarify, so Pellegrini only had to push in. Flick: “We have to position ourselves better. That mustn’t happen.”
Next Tuesday (from 8.45 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online) the German national team will meet England on the second day of the Nations League. The “Three Lions” are already under pressure after the 0-1 defeat against Hungary. Nevertheless, the national coach hopes: “I hope that we needed the game to come in and see another team with a different intensity on Tuesday.”
