Paul de Leeuw will probably be walking around all weekend with ratings migraine and huge doubts about his TV future. The number of people who zap away when he comes into the picture is enormous.
Causing a huge dip in viewing figures in the programming of a TV channel is the nightmare of every celebrity. After all, it is quite obvious what is going on if both the program before you and the program after you attract many more viewers. Then the viewer really doesn’t feel like you anymore. Unfortunately, that is now also happening with Paul de Leeuw.
A lot of zappers
Paul has the advantage that he maintains very warm ties with Frans Klein, the big boss of the public broadcaster, but in the end his viewing figures are leading. The first season of his TV show Busje Komt Zo did reasonably well with an average of more than 800,000 viewers, but the second season has started with drama figures.
The second Busje Komt Zo series started last Wednesday with 510 thousand viewers (12% market share) on NPO 1, while Tussen Kunst en Kitsch scored 1.4 million viewers (33%). This brought the percentage of zappers to a painful 64 percent. Is Paul making up for that with the second episode? No.
Paul is very disappointed
Actually, the second episode of Busje Komt Zo would just be shown again this week on the Wednesday after Tussen Kunst en Kitsch, but NPO 1 feared a huge viewership humiliation for Paul because of the football final with Feyenoord. Some nature movie was broadcast, and Busje Komt Zo was moved to yesterday.
The second Busje Komt Zo attracted only 500 thousand viewers (14%). The program before it, Tweede Hans, scored 1.2 million viewers (27%). This time, Paul is responsible for 58 percent of zappers. Op1, which started an hour later than usual because of Paul, attracted many viewers back to NPO 1. 677 thousand people (26%).
Tina responds
All very painful, thinks TV connoisseur Tina Nijkamp. “Unfortunately, the new broadcast time has not brought in any new viewers. Striking move by the NPO. Can’t remember ever moving a program last minute because of a football final,” she wrote on Instagram.
It cannot be ruled out that Paul asked his good buddy Frans for a favor at the last minute. After all, no presenter is in the mood for a defeat in viewership against football. That he still scores lousy despite that shift, will be very bad for Paul. He will be back on Wednesday next week.
Bed & Breakfast at the top
Yesterday, Bed and Breakfast was the big winner in prime time with 1.4 million viewers (31%) on NPO 1, followed by RTL 4’s De Verraders with 1.2 million viewers (26%). Furthermore, Tweede Hans, Today Inside (768 thousand and 19%) and Beau (638 thousand and 16%) were the most popular.
Prior to VI, Richard Groenendijk managed to captivate only 302 thousand viewers (7%) with Think Inside The Box. Mariëlle Tweebeeke’s interview with Ukrainian President Zelensky attracted 494 thousand viewers (12%) to Nieuwsuur.
Viewing figures
Programs that also failed to make the top 15 include Shownieuws (491 thousand), 112 Today (355 thousand), Time for MAX (339 thousand) and HLF8 (278 thousand).
