The German top javelin thrower Johannes Vetter has expressed reservations for the coming weeks in the World Cup and European Championship season after not starting at the athletics meeting in Dessau.
“We have to find the adjusting screws in the technology, because we continue to work and at the same time get fit. I don’t know how long that will take,” said the 29-year-old to the “MDR”. “We have to look from week to week. But there are still two highlights ahead of us this year. I want to take part – and take part successfully.”
The 2017 World Champion did not start at the competition in Saxony-Anhalt after throwing in. Problems with “foot, shoulder and leg flexor right” handicapped the athlete from LG Offenburg. And if the technique isn’t spot on, it causes pain when the force is applied.
“More of the hit-and-run type”
Although he was “more of the go-getter type”, the waiver was also the decision of coach Boris Obergföll. You didn’t want to take any risks, said Vetter. “There’s too much coming up for that this year.”
The track and field athletes are facing an unusual season. The World Championships from July 15th to 24th in Eugene in the USA and the home European Championships from August 15th to 21st in Munich are two top events coming up in quick succession.
Despite Vetter’s renunciation, there was a German victory in the international field in Dessau. After his good start to the season at the Diamond League meeting in Doha, Julian Weber won with 85.02 meters ahead of the 2012 Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott (Trinidad and Tobago/84.69 meters) and Olympic silver medalist Jakub Vadlejch (Czech Republic/83 .93 meters).
In the long jump, Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo from LG Kurpfalz had previously extended her winning streak in the Paul-Greifzu-Stadion and with 6.49 meters made her fourth win in Dessau clear.
