IDPs from Ukraine in the Netherlands will soon be able to exchange Ukrainian hryvnia for euros. The cabinet is drawing up a regulation for this that will come into effect in the short term. This is a one-time option for a maximum of 10,000 hryvnia (about 310 euros) per person. No transaction fees are charged for the exchange. The scheme will initially apply for three months.

European proposal

Ukrainians who have fled their country often have cash with them. In many European countries, including the Netherlands, it is currently not possible to exchange this money for euros. The European Commission therefore made a proposal on the basis of which Ukrainian currencies can be exchanged in EU Member States at the exchange rate set by the Bank of Ukraine. The EU Member States agreed to this in April.

Elaboration

The Dutch cabinet is working on the details. An amount of up to 23.7 million euros has been reserved for this. That amount is based on the estimate that up to 75,000 Ukrainians want to make use of this. The cabinet is also in talks with a specialized party where Ukrainians can exchange their money. De Nederlandsche Bank will then buy the currency and, as soon as the situation allows, will exchange it again at the national central bank of Ukraine.
