Danish Queen Margrethe celebrates 50 years on the throne in amusement park

Queen Margrethe is celebrating her Golden Jubilee on the Danish throne this year. On January 14 it was exactly fifty years ago that she became queen, but because of corona the festivities were postponed and it was celebrated small. On Saturday it is possible again and there are all kinds of festivities on the program.

Tivoli amusement park in Copenhagen organizes activities in honor of the golden coronation anniversary. The 82-year-old Margrethe then visits the Pantomime Theater and the gardens of the park. A special anniversary tree is planted in the middle of Tivoli.

In the evening, a ballet gala is held in Tivoli’s concert hall. Dancers from the Hamburg Ballet, the Royal Ballet of London, the Paris Opera, the New York City Ballet and the Royal Danish Ballet take the stage there. Margrethe attends this performance with her family. The evening in Tivoli ends with a festive fireworks show.

Earlier this year, the Danish National Bank released a special commemorative coin in honor of Margrethe’s anniversary. The coin appeared in three versions: a silver 500 Danish krone (about 67 euros) and two types of 20 Danish krone (about 27 euros).

In addition, a stamp was issued in January depicting both her younger self and the current Margrethe. The royal coat of arms is placed between the two portraits of the queen. Later in the year, the anniversary will be followed by a luncheon on the royal yacht Dannebrog and a party for Danish government officials and Members of the European Parliament.

Margrethe became head of state of Denmark in 1972, after her father Frederik IX died. The Queen has not had a husband by her side since 2018. Her husband Prince Henrik died in 2018 at the age of 83 after a long illness. Margrethe is the country’s second longest reigning monarch. The record is held by Christian IV, who reigned for sixty years.
