Wolfsburg (dpa) – Chairman of the supervisory board Frank Witter from VfL Wolfsburg has placed himself in front of sports director Jörg Schmadtke after the criticism of the past few days.
“We have regained a sense of unity at VfL Wolfsburg over the past four years under the sporting leadership of Jörg Schmadtke, which has done us a lot of good – both sportingly and as a club,” said the former CFO of the Volkswagen Group in a football statement – Bundesliga clubs quoted. You cannot be divided.
VfL is “still very happy to have Jörg Schmadtke and Marcel Schäfer, who have not only been very competent but also active in sporting management since 2018,” said Witter. “Even if the last season wasn’t satisfactory for the men overall, this fact doesn’t change the least thing about our common understanding: We win and we lose together!”
The Wolfsburg surprisingly parted ways with their coach Florian Kohfeldt last Sunday. This step was seen outside the club as Schmadtke’s loss of power because the sporting director, who was only active until January 2023, actually wanted to continue working with Kohfeldt. Former Bayern coach Niko Kovac is said to be the new coach. An official confirmation of this change is expected in the next few days.
