No world ranking points in Wimbledon – due to the exclusion of Russian players

The ATP has made a far-reaching decision. Due to the exclusion of Russian players from Wimbledon, no world ranking points will be awarded at the tournament in London.

Anyone who takes part in the venerable tennis tournament in Wimbledon this year has a chance of winning the title – but will not be able to collect any world ranking points. The ATP players’ association announced this decision on Friday.

“For our tour, it is fundamental that players of any nationality can participate in tournaments based on their performance and without discrimination,” says the ATP press statement.

ATP wants to prevent precedent

“Wimbledon’s decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players from the tournament in the UK this summer undermines this principle and the integrity of the ATP ranking system. It is also inconsistent with our ranking agreement. Unless circumstances change, we will see with great regret and reluctance no choice but to scrap ATP ranking points for Wimbledon 2022.”

The ATP wants to prevent a precedent according to which individual tournaments are allowed to discriminate against certain players through their own decisions. “This is not feasible on a tour that takes place in more than 30 countries,” it said. At the ATP tournaments in Queen’s Club and in Eastbourne in the run-up to Wimbledon, however, points are awarded for the ATP ranking, where players from Russia and Belarus are allowed.
