BVB is out of the DFB Cup – and as the defending champion. Borussia were not good enough at FC St. Pauli. BVB captain Reus saw it that way, but after the defeat at ARD he was a bit thin-skinned.
1: 2 at FC St. Pauli. BVB was eliminated from the DFB Cup just a few days after beating SC Freiburg 5-1 in the league. In addition to FC Bayern, the second top favorite is now out for the title – much to the annoyance of BVB captain Reus.
How much the national player was bothered by the defeat was noticed immediately after the final whistle in the after-match interview with ARD reporter Valeska Homburg.

Valeska Homburg: Marco Reus, you also had huge chances in front of goal. On a good day, a ball like that naturally goes in. What was different today?
Marco Reus: They have to go in even on bad days. Today was a bad day, not comparable to the game against Freiburg (5-1 win, editor’s note). Of course it was a different game, but we woke up too late. St. Pauli did well, but it’s extremely bitter to be kicked out here. The chance (of the title, editor’s note) was very big – and now we’re not there anymore.

So again, a national player engages in an amusing battle of words with Valeska Homburg. Almost exactly a year ago, on January 14, 2021, Bayern’s Thomas Müller clashed with Homburg.
At that time, Munich had lost in the second round of the cup after a penalty shoot-out at second division team Holstein Kiel. The Kiel failed only in the semifinals – at the eventual winner Borussia Dortmund.
