The plague seems to have been caused by a problem with the sewage system, says police spokesman José van Gijssel. “The detention center is closed and the suspects present had to be transferred to Leeuwarden and Assen. The rats are being fought. Until that is successful, the detention center is closed. We expect to be able to reopen in the near future.”
Not a fairytale
You almost think of a fairy tale picture: prisoners behind bars, together with rats. “Haha, well it’s not really a fairy tale. Suspects have not come face to face with rats: only colleagues have seen them. It is very annoying and we hope it will be resolved soon.”
