What a game of nerves. Eintracht is behind in the final of the Europa League, then comes back and wins the silver pot on penalties. The jubilation about the victory is accordingly great.
Club president Peter Fischer described Eintracht Frankfurt’s victory in the Europa League final as the “greatest moment” in the club’s history. “That’s why I’m a monster-proud president,” said Fischer after the 5-4 penalty shoot-out against Glasgow Rangers on RTL. “Today we can only be happy, celebrate, bring this damn trophy to Frankfurt. We want to bring this miserable bitch to the Römer. We want to show it to the city and the region.”
The Hessians celebrated their second international title after winning the UEFA Cup in 1980. Eintracht automatically qualified for next season’s Champions League with the win on Wednesday evening in Seville. In addition, Frankfurt will play against FC Liverpool or Real Madrid in August for the European Supercup.
“The tears are running, it was a damn close game,” said Fischer. “I’m going to drink out of this pot tonight. I’ve heard that you could normally drink Äppelwoi out of it, but we don’t have that here, so the only thing left is beer. And someone from UEFA just told me: vodka works with the metal taste .”
