Despite the contract until 2023, the German national player should be free to decide whether to leave the Guardiola club thanks to his merits in the summer. The club can probably not meet a certain requirement for him.
Ilkay Gündogan may be about to leave Premier League leaders Manchester City in the summer. As the “Daily Mail” reports, the 31-year-old was free to look for other options in the summer due to his merits. Gündogan’s contract runs until 2023, an extension is unlikely.
The midfielder has played for Man City since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2016 and could win the league for the fourth time this season. He was among coach Pep Guardiola’s first signings. Gündogan also lives in a residential complex in the city center in close proximity to the Spanish coach.
This year, the native of Gelsenkirchen was in the starting XI in 20 of 37 Premier League games and is also one of the five vice-captains. But Gündogan wanted more time, which the club could not guarantee.
