Wanner meets worth seeing
The German U17 started the European Championship in Israel with a win. Coach Marc-Patrick Meister’s team beat Italy 3-2 (2-1) in the opening game in Nes Ziona on Monday. Tom Bischof gave the DFB youth squad the lead in the 24th minute before Paul Wanner (27th) added another worth seeing just three minutes later.

But just before the break, Kevin Bruno (44′) and immediately after the restart by Alessandro Bolzan (48′), the Italians equalized before Dzenan Pejcinovic (56′), who had come on as a substitute just a few seconds earlier, scored the winning goal for the German team.

Other opponents in the preliminary round are Luxembourg on Thursday (4.30 p.m.) and hosts Israel on Sunday (7 p.m.). The top two teams in each of the four groups of four advance to the quarter-finals. The final will take place in Netanya on June 1st. The 2020 and 2021 tournaments in this age group were recently canceled due to the corona pandemic. In 2018 and 2019, the German selection was eliminated in the preliminary round of the European Championship. The last German U17 title so far was in 2009.
