Last Wednesday it went ugly wrong in the away match against FC Utrecht. In stoppage time, the Utrecht team equalized to end the game 2-2. Because number four FC Twente won against FC Groningen, AZ can no longer overtake the Tukkers in the last round. Tomorrow AZ will play against RKC Waalwijk in Alkmaar.
Opponent still unknown
The playoffs start next week. As number five in the competition, AZ starts on Thursday with an away game. The opponent is NEC, sc Heerenveen, Go Ahead Eagles, FC Groningen or SC Cambuur. Tomorrow, after the last competition match, it will be clear who will finish eighth.
If AZ proceed to the final, a home and away match against Vitesse or FC Utrecht will be played on Thursday 26 and Sunday 29 May. The winner will qualify for the preliminary round of the Conference League.
