Willem II will fight for one last chance at enforcement in the home game against FC Utrecht on Sunday. The club from Tilburg is relegated if it loses or draws. After a win, Kevin Hofland’s team is dependent on Fortuna Sittard and Sparta Rotterdam. The numbers 16 and 15 of the ranking defend a lead of 2 points over Willem II in the last round.
Fortuna will play an away game with NEC on Sunday. Sparta is facing an away match against Heracles Almelo. The number 17 of the Eredivisie will play in the Kitchen Champion Division next season. The number 16 gets a second chance in the playoffs. The number 15 is sure to maintain at the highest level.
Willem II trainer Hofland sees it as an advantage that his team may only benefit from a victory over FC Utrecht. ,,It may sound crazy, but because it is 100 percent clear what we have to do, there is peace in the group. Of course there is also healthy tension, which is a good sign.”
Hofland realizes that a win over FC Utrecht may not be able to keep his team in the Eredivisie. “It is what it is,” he says. ,,It is special that all three scenarios are still possible on the last day of play. I’ve never experienced that before. But thinking in ‘if’ is of no use to us. We have to win before we look at others.”
Willem II was promoted to the Eredivisie in 2014 and has been playing at the highest level ever since. The club was in fifth place two years ago when the season was cut short because of corona.
