The United Kingdom is coming up with new legislation that will require ferry companies calling at British ports to pay their employees at least the British minimum wage. British Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced this.
Ferry companies that refuse to comply with the new legislation will no longer be allowed to dock in British ports, Shapps clarified.
Shapps had already announced at the end of March that it would come up with new legislation after P&O Ferries had thrown out nearly 800 employees in one fell swoop. They were replaced by cheaper workers.
The new law will be presented at the next parliamentary session and will be the subject of consultations with ports and the maritime sector.
