The 2022 Ice Hockey World Championships will take place in Finland from May 13th to 29th, 2022. sport.de has put together the most important information on participants, mode, schedule, TV broadcasts, live tickers and the dates of the German national ice hockey team.
The 85th Ice Hockey World Championship begins on May 13 (3:20 p.m.) with the games France against Slovakia in Group A and USA against Latvia in Group B. Germany will start the tournament on May 14 (7:20 p.m.) with a bang against defending champions Canada.
The main venue of the Ice Hockey World Championship 2022 is the Nokia Arena in Tampere. In addition, some games take place in the Helsingin Jäähalli in the Finnish capital Helsinki.

Ice Hockey World Championship 2022: This is the mode
The 16 teams at the 2022 Ice Hockey World Championships in Finland are divided into two groups of eight nations each.
- Group A starts with Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Canada, Kazakhstan, Switzerland and Slovakia.
- Group B consists of Finland, Great Britain, Latvia, Norway, Austria, Sweden, Czech Republic, USA.
In the preliminary round of the Ice Hockey World Championship, the quarter-finalists and the relegated are determined.
- Everyone plays against everyone.
- The top two in each group advance to the knockout stages.
- The two worst teams overall are relegated directly.
- In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decides.
Three points are awarded for a win after regulation time. If there is a tie after 60 minutes, there is overtime until the next goal (“sudden death”). There are only three field players per team and the goalkeeper on the one.
If no decision has been made after that, it goes to a penalty shootout. The winner gets two points and the loser gets one point.
In the quarter-finals of the 2022 Ice Hockey World Championships, the first-placed in the group stage will meet the fourth and the second-placed against the third-placed in the other preliminary round group. The winners advance to the semi-finals.
The two semi-final winners determine the world champion in the final. Bronze is at stake in the small final.
In the knockout games except the final, a draw is extended by a maximum of ten minutes until a goal is scored. In the final for gold by 20 minutes. Only three field players per team are allowed.
Ice Hockey World Championship 2022: This is the schedule
The preliminary round of the Ice Hockey World Championship 2022 starts on May 13th and ends on May 24th. The final round begins after the preliminary round is completed on May 26, 2022, giving all teams at least one rest day.
The semi-finals will take place on May 28th. The final and the bronze match will take place on May 29th.
