The team of head national coach Detlef Poste lost 0:5 to Taiwan. Due to injury, Germany had to do without double European champion Mark Lamsfuss again.
The game against the Asians was more competitive than the result suggests. Four of the five games went into the third set. The German champion Kai Schäfer (Fun-Ball Dortelweil) defended himself against Wang Tzu-Wei for 86 minutes before losing the game 21:15, 18:21, 16:21.
Max Weißkirchen and Samuel Hsiao also brought their opponents from Taiwan into the deciding set in the individual games, without anything countable coming out at the end. After the opening defeat against India, the Germans no longer have a chance of entering the knockout stages.
Women lose to Japan
The German women started the Uber Cup on Sunday with a 0:5 loss against runner-up Japan. The second opponent is Indonesia on Tuesday, then it’s on to France.
Lamsfuss, EM champion in doubles and mixed, was not used, his partner Isabel Lohau was absent due to illness. Both had recently triumphed in Madrid and were then voted April’s athletes of the month by the German Sports Aid Foundation.
Both teams of the German Badminton Association (DBV) started as outsiders in their groups.
