Tennis player Koolhof takes first masters title in Madrid

Tennis player Wesley Koolhof has won a masters tournament in doubles for the first time in Madrid. The 33-year-old Dutchman, together with his British partner Neal Skupski, was too strong for Colombians Juan Sebastián Cabal and Robert Farah in the final. It became 6-7 (4) 6-4 10-5. The Dutch-British duo only used the fourth game point after more than 2 hours with a backhand volley from Koolhof, after which the duo went to their knees.

Koolhof was in the final battle of a masters tournament for the fifth time. In 2019 he lost the final in Miami, Monte Carlo and Montreal and this year he again narrowly missed the title in Miami. In 2020 Koolhof did win the ATP Finals.

For Koolhof and Skupski, who lead the ranking for 2022, it was already the fourth title of the season. They have already triumphed this year in Melbourne, Adelaide and Doha.

The masters tournament in Rome is scheduled for Koolhof and Skupski next week.
