33rd match day not at the same time: change due to TV marketing

Frankfurt / Main (dpa) – The penultimate match day in the Bundesliga so equalized? Not all games at the same time as in the end? Many fans are surprised that the 33rd matchday stretches from Friday to Sunday this weekend.

The German Football League had already announced the regulation – also for the 2nd division – in 2020 when tendering for the new media rights for the seasons 2021/2022 to 2024/2025.

The reason is TV marketing: More broadcast dates due to different time schedules bring in more money. The danger of a possible manipulation of game results would be greatest on the last day of the game if the table constellation for some teams were known in advance with different kick-off times. Already last season, the schedule of which was influenced by the coronavirus pandemic, two games of the 33rd matchday took place on Sunday.

As a result of the change, FC Bayern will receive the championship trophy in its last home game this Sunday: the new DFL boss Donata Hopfen will present it to the Munich team on Sunday (5:30 p.m. / DAZN) in the game against VfB Stuttgart.
