Bill Bruford has been involved in a number of musical projects over the past 50 years as one of the most original and innovative drummers in a wide variety of musical genres. He rose to prominence as a founding member of the progressive rock band YES and has since expanded his horizons with involvement in other bands. He drummed for King Crimson and Genesis, among others, but also devoted himself to solo projects. In 2017, Bruford was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of YES.
For the release of his six-part retrospective “Making A Song And Dance: A Complete-Career Collection”, which was published in April, ROLLING STONE is giving away a signed box set.
Bill Bruford doesn’t fit into any category
Bruford has selected 70 songs from his entire career for the edition. These tracks include works by 23 different artists and bands. The musician would have “consciously avoided classifying them in industry categories such as ‘progressive rock’, ‘fusion’ or ‘jazz'”. In his opinion, “most of the music I’ve been associated with fits very badly into such categories”.
Six CDs with the most diverse collaborations
The Making A Song and Dance: A Complete-Career Collection box set includes tracks from his time with Yes, King Crimson, Bruford and Bill Bruford’s Earthworks. It also includes his collaborations with guitarists Al Di Meola, Steve Howe and Kazumi Watanabe. Common titles with the keyboarders Patrick Moraz and Michiel Borstlap can also be found on the six discs. Also included in the box is a biography and photos written by Bruford.
Bruford’s only interest was drums
“I was interested in the broader discourse about drums and drumming, not any notion of success or fame,” Bruford summarizes his career. He further explains: “My raison d’être was to think up interesting things for the drums. […] I didn’t really care what the critics, commentators or musicologists thought, and that was to remain my cornerstone, my modus operandi, for many years to come.”
