Freiburg (dpa) – The return of national soccer player Matthias Ginter to his home club SC Freiburg is perfect. The 28-year-old central defender is moving from league rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach to Breisgau on a free transfer, the Bundesliga club announced.
SC Freiburg also underlined its probably higher sporting ambitions in the future. “Matze can give our defense stability and his football skills can also do us good in opening the game,” said sporting director Klemens Hartenbach.
At the sports club, which is on course for the Champions League, the 2014 world champion should compensate for the departure of national team colleague Nico Schlotterbeck, who will play for Borussia Dortmund in the future. Freiburg should receive a fee of at least 20 million euros for the 22-year-old. The club did not provide any information on the term of Ginter’s contract. The professional, who was born in the university town, comes from the Freiburg youth football school and was under contract with them until 2014. After three years in Dortmund, he went to Mönchengladbach in 2017.
