Manchester City’s spectacular 4-3 win over Real Madrid on Tuesday night has gone down in history as one of the highest-scoring Champions League semi-finals ever. There have only been seven goals in a semifinal match since 1992, as a look at the TM database shows: In 2017/18 Liverpool, who were also in the semifinals this year, defeated AS Roma in the first leg with 5 :2, just as high Ajax Amsterdam won the second leg against FC Bayern Munich in 1994/95 (to the match report).
While the Reds subsequently lost the final in Kyiv 3-1 against Real, Louis van Gaal’s legendary Ajax side beat AC Milan 1-0 in Vienna. There have never been more than seven goals in a Champions League semi-final game, six goals twice and five even twelve times.
