In addition to the well-known free market, Dorpsbelangen Schoonloo is organizing a shopping day today. Normally that happens at the end of the year, but this year they do it on King’s Day.
“Because we haven’t been able to organize a shopping day for two years in the corona time, we have quite a lot of stuff,” says Anton Bardie. “That’s why we thought: let’s organize a Kleintje shopping day on King’s Day.”
Traditionally, feast days are organized in our province. The tradition has been back in Schoonloo since 2002. Bardie: “A shopping day is actually an auction, farmers then went to sell stuff with a flat wagon from what they had left. It was sold in the middle of the village. We have continued that principle in the present day.”
The auction items, the so-called ‘lots’, are still displayed this year on a farm cart. The highest bidder takes home the lot. In total there are about fifty auction items. Residents and casual passers-by participate. Jans Jansen looks forward to it every year. “I think this is very beautiful! Also for the children in the village. They have done their best on that.”
Jansen has his eyes on a set of garden chairs. Handy, because then he can sit on it immediately. He can get them for 2 euros each. “I hope they are delivered at home,” he laughs.
The proceeds go to the village treasury, says Bardie. “We organize a large village festival once every two years, and that of course requires some money. We can also put the stuff on Marktplaats, but then the charm is gone. This is also a pleasant day together. yields, it delivers and we’ll get new stuff next year.”
