That was decided on Tuesday in London

At a meeting in London on Tuesday, the Formula 1 Commission gave the green light for the increase from the current three to six sprint races from the 2023 season. Both the teams and rights holders Liberty Media signaled their approval of the plan. The FIA supports this according to its own statements, but is still examining the burden on its own employees.

Representatives of the teams, Formula 1 and the FIA are entitled to vote on the commission. The committee is considered one of the most important instances in the regulation process of the premier class. However, the FIA World Motor Sport Council has the last word and can theoretically overturn the commission’s decisions in the last instance. In practice, however, this is rarely the case.

Another major item on the agenda was the 2026 engine regulations. however, the proposals already on the table have been confirmed. These are the following cornerstones:

– Around 1,000 hp system power, V6 layout with high revs.

– Eliminate excessive performance differences for more exciting races.

– 50 percent electrical system performance, 100 percent sustainable petrol.

– Retaining cutting-edge technology at a lower cost than before. Work on fine-tuning the regulations continues.

– Attractive entry conditions for new manufacturers. These should have a realistic chance of being competitive right from the start.

In the course of formulating the engine regulations, the chassis regulations for 2026 will also be adjusted. Smaller cars are targeted for less drag. The chosen path for easier driving behind should be continued. No further increase in weight. And additional standardization of components for cost reasons. In addition, materials should be environmentally friendly and/or recyclable.

It was also decided that the new helmet cameras, which were recently randomly tested, must be carried by every driver from 2023. And at two test events, Pirelli will only provide the teams with eleven sets of tires instead of the previous 13. This should also serve more sustainability in Formula 1.
