The German tennis men around Alexander Zverev meet France, Belgium and Australia in the intermediate round of the Davis Cup in Hamburg. This resulted in the draw for Group C from September 14th to 18th at Rothenbaum.
The top two teams in each group advance to the quarter-finals, which, like the full knockout stage, will take place in Malaga from November 21-27. In the round of the top eight teams, the selection of the German Tennis Association as the group winner could face a clash with Spain or Serbia.
“It’s a great, interesting group with opponents we know very well, some of whom we still have open scores against,” said Davis Cup captain Michael Kohlmann. “There are no easy draws. Difficult group, but definitely doable,” said doubles specialist Kevin Krawietz. “But we’re also a good team and very well positioned. We have good chances with our team and are happy to be playing in front of our home crowd in Hamburg.”
Led by Zverev, Germany qualified for the second round with a 3-1 win in Brazil at the beginning of March. The best German tennis player also wants to be there in Hamburg. “The new date in September enabled me to take part in the “Group Finals”. And if I’m playing at that time, why not in Germany right away? The other group stages will be played in Bologna, Valencia and Glasgow. In Group B there is the game between Serbia and Spain and thus a potential duel between world number one Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, should both players participate.
