Henrique Araújo with a hat-trick
Benfica Lisbon have won the UEFA Youth League for the first time after losing three finals. The youngsters of the “Adler” confidently beat Red Bull Salzburg 6-0 in the final on Monday. Henrique Araújo was the outstanding youngster on the pitch with a hat-trick (15′, 57′, 89’/penalties), while Martim Neto (2′), Cher Ndour (53′) and Luís Semedo (69′) scored the goals for the Portuguese, who followed Real Madrid as title holders with a year’s break. Last season, UEFA canceled the competition due to the corona pandemic and the associated travel restrictions in Europe. Salzburg, meanwhile, failed to lift the trophy for the second time after 2016/17. At that time the coach was called Marco Rose.
The best German representative this season was the U19s from Borussia Dortmund, who lost to Atlético Madrid in the quarter-finals. For 1. FC Köln, on the other hand, it was over in the intermediate round, as was FC Bayern, VfL Wolfsburg and RB Leipzig in the group phase.
