With the end of the pandemic-related restrictions, many people are longing for the return of theater and other cultural institutions. It seemed like an eternity without the boards that mean the world. For fashion, too, there was a return to theatrics: catwalk shows. The past few fashion weeks have proven one thing for sure: the runway show is back, bold and beautiful as ever.
Lu Chen presents her Fall/Winter 2022 runway collection
Parsons graduate Lu Chen, who recently launched her eponymous label Luchen, chose to show her Fall/Winter 2022 collection off the calendar this season. Her show was held at the Daryl Roth Theater and that was fitting given the theatrics that were going on. What initially looked like a traditional catwalk show quickly turned into a theatrical performance. A model in a black jacket with red piping and a black pleated skirt walked the runway while the audience was filmed.
For most of the runway show, there was a bed on the stage on which the models appeared to be miming. One walked the catwalk in an elaborate hat reminiscent of a bird. The first looks consisted of neutral black and white pieces. The collection then evolved into colorful models in plum, red, pink and blue. The final look was literally stripped down to the essentials. A gender-fluid model closed the show in a sheer black coat and black underwear.
Chen said she wanted the collection to explore the notion of how our intangible thoughts and beliefs really exist and what they might look like. It’s been an interesting journey for Chen, first brought into focus by dressing Broadway producer Jordan Roth.
Luchen has managed to position itself as an up-and-coming luxury brand whose clothing ranges from $325 to $4,920 in their online store. The theatrics seem to be paying off for the designer, as while she’s just building her brand, she’s already attracted a small but influential client base. A good first act.
