Researchers Examine 16,000 Participants
Researchers from Augusta University analyzed data from over 16,000 men and women aged 60 and older. As part of a randomized study spanning three years, participants took either a daily multivitamin-mineral supplement, a cocoa extract, both, or a placebo.
Using a standardized questionnaire, scientists assessed how well participants managed their daily activities. This included tasks such as dressing, bathing, walking, climbing stairs, and household chores. Additionally, symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath, and swollen feet were recorded. The study was presented at the Nutrition 2026 conference.
Fewer Complaints, Everyday Tasks Made Easier
After three years, those taking the daily multivitamin showed slightly better outcomes than the placebo group. Notably, the burden from various complaints decreased somewhat. However, physical performance itself did not show measurable improvement.
Study author Dr. Bayu B. Bekele explains, “What makes this work special is our focus on functional health—how people actually feel and function in daily life, rather than just preventing serious illnesses.” For older adults, a daily multivitamin could serve as a “helpful, low-risk addition to a healthy lifestyle,” enhancing physical well-being in later life. However, it should not replace a balanced diet or exercise.
Cocoa Extract Shows Minimal Effect
The cocoa extract under investigation did not significantly improve overall functional health across the entire group. Only participants with heart failure experienced some benefit regarding their symptoms.
Researchers also emphasize that dietary supplements should not be taken without consultation with a healthcare provider. Further studies are needed to identify which demographic groups may particularly benefit from daily multivitamin intake.
The Importance of a Balanced Approach
While the findings suggest that multivitamins may offer a modest boost in everyday functioning for older adults, they are not a panacea. A healthy lifestyle—including proper nutrition and regular physical activity—remains paramount. This study reinforces that while supplements can be beneficial, they should complement, not replace, a well-rounded approach to health.
