Researchers Puzzle Over Reasons for Orcas Ramming Giant Fish Until It “Explodes”

A female orca secures a large fish by its tail, allowing another orca to charge at high speed and collide with it, resulting in the fish being smashed into countless pieces. Unusual Behavior Observed in California Gulf

The extraordinary findings stem from observations made in the Gulf of California, where researchers documented a series of underwater events between 2024 and 2025. The orcas were found to utilize their strength and coordination to dismantle their prey, a species known as the ocean sunfish, or Mola Mola. These uniquely shaped fish can weigh up to two tons and grow over three meters in length, frequently surfacing to warm up and rid themselves of parasites, making them relatively easy targets for orcas.

How It Works: A Two-Part Strategy

During the study, lead researcher Kathryn Ayres witnessed two incidents involving a group of orcas, one of which included a young calf. In both instances, a female orca captured the large fish by its tail, creating a stable target for a male orca to ram into at speed. The timing was crucial; the female would release her hold just moments before impact, resulting in the disintegration of the fish’s body, scattering tissue and flesh across the water. As smaller pieces floated away, the juvenile orca consumed them, while adults feasted on larger remains.

Cooperative Behavior or Just Play?

One hypothesis suggests that this behavior is rooted in parental care. By breaking down their catch into smaller portions, adult orcas may be facilitating easier feeding for their young. Ayres notes that orcas often tear apart their prey to share with other pod members, including calves and younger ones, which allows the latter to learn essential hunting and feeding skills.

Conversely, another explanation posits that these ramming actions may stem from playful behavior rather than necessity. Orcas are known for exhibiting playful habits, such as manipulating prey long after it has been caught. Whether the acts are driven by the need to nurture or a simple enjoyment of the hunt remains an open question.

Ongoing Observations: Evolution of Techniques

The research team emphasizes the importance of continuing observations to understand these evolving hunting techniques among orcas. Identifying individual orcas for long-term study is challenging; researchers require clearer images of dorsal fins and distinctive color patterns near their eyes to establish a more definitive understanding of these behaviors. Ayres concludes that even as one of the ocean’s apex predators, orcas continue to astonish scientists by revealing new strategies for hunting and processing their food.
