The public beta versions of Apple’s anticipated operating systems for Mac, iPhone, and other Apple devices are now available. With macOS 27 Golden Gate, new AI and Siri features are fundamentally accessible, even in Germany. However, it seems that few users will switch their system language to English to test these functionalities, as Apple has yet to announce a timeline for a German-speaking version.
Refinements Over Major Overhauls
The update to macOS 27 presents itself as decidedly calm. Instead of major changes or features that alter familiar workflows, it includes numerous subtle improvements. While the aesthetic updates are appealing, they focus on enhancing usability rather than overhauling the user experience.
One frequently expressed desire since the introduction of “Liquid Glass” last year has been the question of whether the emphasis should be on aesthetics or functionality. Apple has responded by providing a slider that allows users to adjust the intensity of this effect seamlessly, thus enhancing usability without sacrificing visual appeal.
Integrated Bartender Functionality
Users have long awaited improvements regarding the “Notch” cutout in the menu bar’s design. It appears Apple has taken cues from third-party solutions. When the right side of the menu bar becomes cluttered, a double-arrow signals that not all elements are visible. Users can click this arrow to reveal hidden items on the left side of the screen.
Additionally, macOS 27 offers new wallpapers. In addition to a standard background in shades of gold, users can also opt for a desktop image featuring the namesake of the new operating system, the Golden Gate Bridge.
Rosetta Needs to be Reinstalled if Necessary
A crucial note for users relying on older, non-Apple-optimized applications: don’t be alarmed if these apps do not work immediately after the update. By default, the translation technology Rosetta, needed for running such applications, is removed during the update process to macOS Golden Gate. However, users can reinstall it, which provides a transition period until the end of 2027.
