Sam Hagens Admits to Misleading About RTL Audition
Recently, Sam Hagens made headlines when he confessed that he had lied to the media regarding his audition for RTL. The popular presenter expressed a desire to keep the audition private, stating, “It was very strange,” as he navigated through the complexities of working in television.

Despite being spotted during a pilot recording for RTL, Hagens initially denied any interest in switching networks. His colleagues from WNL, Frank van Leeuwen and Welmoed Sijtsma, also participated in the audition process, with Sijtsma eventually landing the role. The refusal to acknowledge his involvement seemed futile, yet Hagens felt it necessary at the time.
Facing the Truth
In a candid interview with De Telegraaf, he revealed the truth behind his denial: “It was very strange. I recorded a pilot, and less than an hour later, RTL Boulevard called me. When you apply elsewhere, your current employer usually doesn’t know about it.”
Hagens explained that he didn’t want to disclose the details because it felt private. He mentioned that it’s common in the industry to do pilot recordings and that he informed WNL about his audition the very next day.
Opportunities at WNL
Hagens emphasized that he is not unhappy at WNL, stating, “I really don’t need to leave WNL. The NPO gives me incredible opportunities, including my own radio program, a documentary series, and a summer talk show. A few years ago, I couldn’t have dreamed of this.”
When questioned about loyalty, he clarified that WNL holds no grudges. “Everyone understands that your loyalty doesn’t suddenly vanish due to this. I think it’s great that Welmoed is the one who got the job. She will do very well as a solo presenter.”
Reflections on Career Changes
Following his recent media exposure, Hagens will return as the host of the summer talk show “Goedenavond Nederland.” However, his impact from last year’s season was underwhelming. Some might wonder if he regrets leaving SBS 6, where his successor Thomas van Groningen currently enjoys numerous opportunities.
