Nothing has launched its new Ear (3a) in-ear headphones, which stand out due to their distinctive design and attractive price point. This model succeeds the Nothing Ear (a), first introduced in 2024. Priced at just 99 euros, it offers Hi-Res Audio with LDAC, a new 12mm driver, and several smart additional features.
Design and Appearance
Nothing stays true to its design ethos with the Ear (3a). The headphones continue to incorporate transparent elements and a technical aesthetic, making them stand out from many other in-ears on the market. This distinctive look remains one of the biggest advantages of Nothing headphones; they do not merely resemble any other model available.
A notable upgrade is the rounder, gentler charging case inspired by retro tablet blister packs and sealed packaging. It also features a new LED status indicator to display battery levels, charging status, and pairing progress.
Fit and Comfort
To ensure a better fit, Nothing includes new XS ear tips with the Ear (3a). This addition aims to make the headphones suitable for even more ear shapes. In daily use, the Ear (3a) fit comfortably and securely, making them apt for extended listening sessions or workouts.
Audio Performance
Equipped with a dynamic 12mm driver, the Nothing Ear (3a) promises enhanced bass compared to its predecessor, reporting up to 5 dB more low-end. The lightweight PMI membrane aims to deliver clear highs and more pronounced details. Additionally, the Ear (3a) are Hi-Res Audio Wireless certified and support LDAC, which allows for audio transmission of up to 24 Bit and 96 kHz, contingent upon the connected smartphone’s support for the codec.
Sound Quality
For 99 euros, the Ear (3a) offer an impressive sound. The audio profile is full, clean, and well-balanced. The bass is robust without being overly dominant. Voices remain clear, and even at higher volumes, the overall sound does not become unpleasantly harsh. Users can further tweak the audio experience through the Nothing X app, which includes an 8-band equalizer and the option to create and share personal audio profiles.
Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)
ANC is another strong feature of the Ear (3a), promising reduction of up to 45 dB. The ANC algorithm has been revamped to better filter everyday ambient sounds between 400 Hz and 2,000 Hz.
In real-world use, the ANC performs surprisingly well, diminishing street noise, voices, fans, and gym sounds significantly. While not quite on par with premium headphones like the AirPods Pro 3, the performance is still commendable for its price range.
Transparency Mode
The transparency mode also impresses, allowing users to converse without removing the earbuds. Nothing has refined this function, outperforming many competitors in the same price category.
Innovative Features
Audio Snapshot
The Ear (3a) bring exciting software enhancements, including a feature called Audio Snapshot. Equipped with 32 MB of built-in flash memory, the headphones enable users to store short audio moments. Activating the feature with both earbuds captures not only the moment after activation but also audio immediately before it.
This function allows for easy storage of brief podcast segments or song excerpts, which are synchronized with the Nothing X app for playback, editing, and sharing.
Call Recording
The Ear (3a) also supports recording calls and meetings, with the ability to capture discussions lasting around two hours. These recordings sync with the Nothing X app, where they can be played back, edited, and transcribed.
Battery Life
With ANC turned off, the Ear (3a) offer up to 10 hours of playback on a single charge. The charging case extends the total battery life to 42 hours. Even with ANC active, users can enjoy up to 6 hours with the earbuds and 25 hours with the case.
Pricing and Availability
The Nothing Ear (3a) are available now for 99 euros. They will also be available at retailers like MediaMarkt, Saturn, and Otto starting July 8, in colors including black, white, yellow, and the new pink.
For 99 euros, the Ear (3a) provide a comprehensive package. Features like Audio Snapshot and call recording are interesting extras but may not be essential for everyone. The standout elements remain the excellent sound quality, effective ANC, usable transparency mode, and distinctive design. Nothing once again delivers an appealing product at a fair price, making these in-ears a compelling choice for those seeking not just great sound but also aesthetic uniqueness.
