Samsung’s One UI 9.0 Announcement: What to Expect
The South Korean electronics giant Samsung has begun updating its customization suite, Good Lock, signaling that the launch of One UI 9.0 based on Android 17 is just around the corner. Key modules such as LockStar, NavStar, and Display Assistant have already been optimized for the upcoming operating system.
Galaxy Unpacked: Foldable Phones Take Center Stage
The stable version of One UI 9.0 is set to debut on July 22, 2026, alongside the unveiling of new foldable smartphones: Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Z Flip 8. These devices are expected to be the first to come with the new software. Owners of current models like the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 won’t have to wait long either, as initial firmware tests are already underway.
The broader rollout for additional devices will occur gradually, expected to extend until November 2026. Newer models are likely to receive their updates in August and September.
Good Lock: A Customization Powerhouse
The updated Good Lock modules are now available with version numbers 9.0.00.11 (NavStar) and 9.0.00.5 (LockStar). These tools allow for deep customization of both the navigation bar and the lock screen. In total, the suite includes around 21 tools that have been accessible since late 2025 in both the Galaxy Store and the Google Play Store, applicable to all Galaxy devices running One UI 6 or higher.
AI-Powered Features: Samsung Now Brief
With One UI 8.5, Samsung offered a glimpse into the future with the Samsung Now Brief, delivering personalized, AI-driven information three times a day—morning, noon, and night. This feed can be accessed via the lock screen, Edge Panels, or home screen widgets. It’s a feature likely to see expansion in One UI 9.0.
While newer AI functionalities promise to enhance everyday tasks, security remains paramount. A complimentary PDF guide highlights five simple steps to make your Android smartphone instantly more secure.
Enhancements for Galaxy Wearable
The Galaxy Wearable app has also received an update. Improvements in stability and user interface suggest support for new hardware, specifically the Galaxy Watch9 and Watch Ultra 2, expected to launch in July 2025.
Security and Productivity: Focus on Knox and S Pen
Samsung continues its commitment to security with the Knox-based platform. The Galaxy Secure Folder offers a protected environment for sensitive data, allowing users to separate work from personal applications, safeguard banking apps, and manage multiple social media accounts—all securely isolated from the main interface.
For productivity-centric devices like the Galaxy S26 Ultra or Galaxy Tab S9 FE, the S Pen remains an essential tool. Features such as Screen-Off Memo, Air Command, and specialized eraser modes are designed to enhance workflow. An additional hidden Intelligent Wi-Fi menu provides over 20 advanced network functions.
Android 17: Expanded Control Over Backups and New Signature Features
The upcoming Android 17 update hints at crucial innovations. Users will gain finer control over app-specific data backups to the cloud. This includes the ability to enable or disable synchronization for individual applications like WhatsApp directly from system settings.
In June, Google introduced a new app called Signatures in its Play System update. This application, already seen on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and other flagship devices, allows users to sign documents via drawing, text input, or photos. Currently, data is stored locally without cryptographic security measures, making it a handy tool for digital document editing across devices running Android 12 or higher.
As Samsung gears up for the release of One UI 9.0 along with exciting new devices, anticipation grows for enhanced features and customization options that will redefine user experiences.
