Sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, and symptoms resembling a heart attack triggered by extreme emotional or physical stress characterize the so-called Broken-Heart Syndrome. This serious condition is often underestimated. Prof. Dr. Nadine Abanador-Kamper is researching at the University of Witten/Herdecke (UW/H) how this disease can be detected early and treated more effectively. She has been appointed to the chair of cardiology with a focus on “Cardiac Imaging.”

The Broken-Heart Syndrome, medically known as Takotsubo Syndrome, leads to acute cardiac muscle dysfunction and presents symptoms similar to those of a classic heart attack. However, modern imaging techniques like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can detect this disease early and differentiate it from other life-threatening cardiac conditions. “In acute situations, rapid and precise diagnostics are crucial to optimally tailor patient care,” says Prof. Dr. Abanador-Kamper.

Understanding Gender Differences in Heart Disease

A major focus of her research is on cardiac imaging in acute heart diseases. Simultaneously, her team investigates gender-specific differences in diagnostics and care. The Broken-Heart Syndrome predominantly affects women, exhibiting different symptoms and manifestations as compared to men. For decades, cardiac medicine primarily focused on male symptoms and disease course, leading to delays in the diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases in women. “Heart diseases in women are still often recognized later or misclassified,” explains Prof. Dr. Abanador-Kamper. “Therefore, it’s essential to understand how therapies can be better tailored to women.”

The Role of Advanced Imaging Techniques in Cardiology Education

In education, Prof. Dr. Abanador-Kamper aims to integrate contemporary developments more intensely. She coordinates education at the Chair of Cardiology at UW/H, equipping students with the knowledge to effectively use modern cardiac imaging techniques. “The significance of cardiac cross-sectional imaging has increased enormously in recent years, and it is now included in many international guidelines,” she notes. This knowledge is now as fundamental to medical training as traditional EKG foundational knowledge.

Furthermore, she is exploring how artificial intelligence can assist in analyzing complex imaging data. The combination of advanced imaging and AI opens up new possibilities for research and clinical care.
