A very heavy blow hits Markéta Vondroušová. The Czech tennis player, former number 6 in the world ranking and winner of Wimbledon in 2023, was disqualified for four years by an independent tribunal after refusing to undergo an out-of-competition anti-doping test.

the story

The episode dates back to December 3 last year, when a control officer showed up at the player’s home, around 8pm, to request a biological sample. According to the investigation, Vondroušová did not provide the requested sample, thus violating international anti-doping rules. The court’s decision is based on a key principle in the fight against doping, the ITIA (International Tennis Integrity Agency) writes in a note: refusal to undergo a test is treated in the same way as a positive result. A rule designed to prevent any athletes who use prohibited substances from circumventing the system by accepting a less severe sanction by simply refusing to undergo checks.

the defense

During the hearing, the 26-year-old Czech explained that she had gone through a period of severe stress and mental health difficulties, adding that she had fears for her safety. Arguments that the court took into consideration together with the testimony of the officer in charge of the test, without however considering them sufficient to justify the refusal. “No convincing justification”, was the conclusion of the judging panel.

“Surprise checks to ensure integrity”

Itia CEO Karen Moorhouse recalled how surprise checks represent an indispensable tool to guarantee the integrity of sport. “We understand that the testing process may be inconvenient for athletes, but it is essential to safeguard the fairness of the competitions – declares Moorhouse – The safety of the players and our staff is an absolute priority: the staff are qualified, identifiable and operate following rigorous procedures”. Moorhouse then underlined the value of the ruling: “This case represents an important reminder for all athletes. Checks can take place at any time and place, and refusal carries very serious consequences.” Vondroušová’s disqualification will last until June 21, 2030, pending a likely appeal.
