Many Amsterdammers feel this less. And Noorman also believes that the municipality does not always give priority to the port and the companies located there. The municipality wants to build tens of thousands of houses in the new Haven-City district at the expense of part of the port, while the province wants to protect the port and industry. “I understand that homes need to be added. But the port is so incredibly important. It is of course strange that the province sees the need for this more than the municipality itself,” says Noorman.
Yet there are quite a few port enthusiasts to be found on the Javakade. “It’s wonderful what happens there,” says a visitor. “I think it’s powerful. Those ships are huge, amazing to see.”
