Manuel Neuer overtakes Frenchman Hugo Lloris with his 21st World Cup appearance against Ivory Coast. The 40-year-old is not the only record holder – he also has other records.
Germany’s number one made World Cup history: in the group game against Ivory Coast Manuel Neuer completed his 21st World Cup appearance, surpassing previous leader Hugo Lloris as the tournament’s record goalkeeper. The Frenchman set the mark as world champion in 2018, but is no longer in the squad Equipe Tricolore.
National coach Julian Nagelsmann Neuer praised MagentaTV before the game: “He gives us a lot of peace, has a lot of experience – the young people in particular benefit from it.” Follow in third and fourth place on the all-time goalkeeper list Sepp Maier and Claudio Taffarel. The German world champion from 1974 and the Brazilian world champion from 1994 both made 18 World Cup appearances. Neuer is the only one of the four leaders to have played in five World Cups.

Only two players ahead of Neuer
Neuer also holds other records: he is the oldest ever at one WM DFB player used and, with 126 international matches, has played in the German goal more often than anyone else. No German national player played more games in major tournaments – 21 World Cup and 20 European Championship games, 41 in total.
In order to finally become Germany’s World Cup record player, Neuer would have to go with the DFB eleven move into the quarterfinals. Still in front of him Miroslav Klose at 24 and record national player Lothar Matthäus with 25 World Cup appearances. However, one record remains out of reach for Neuer: the Italian Dino Zoff was 40 years and 133 days old when he won the 1982 final against the DFB team – the oldest world champion of all time. Neuer will be 19 days younger on July 19th.
