The Netherlands turned out en masse in front of the TV on Saturday evening. 4.7 million people watched the World Cup match between the Netherlands and Sweden, which started at 7 p.m. Dutch time, reports Stichting Kijkonderzoek. That is half a million more people than the first group match against Japan.
The high viewing figures are no surprise. The time and the nice weather provided the perfect cocktail to get the Netherlands in front of the TV en masse. Many families watched at home on the couch, but there were also loud cheers in gardens and in bars for the Dutch team, which achieved a generous 5-1 victory.
Dutch television viewers also watched the aftermath en masse: 2.5 million viewers tuned in to the NOS analysis. 684,000 people opted for it The Orange Summer on SBS 6. The match between Germany and Ivory Coast was also popular, with 1.5 million people watching it.
The viewing figures are actually even higher because the number of people who watched Oranje outside the home (think of watching in a café) has not yet been taken into account. The next match of the Dutch national team will take place on Friday at 1:00 am. Then the Dutch team plays against Tunisia.
