Tennis professional Daniel Altmaier continued his surprising winning streak at the ATP tournament in Halle/Westphalia and followed Alexander Zverev into the semi-finals. The 27-year-old from Kempen defeated the Russian Daniil Medvedev, Halle finalist in 2022 and 2025, 6:4, 6:7 (6:8), 6:4 after 2:45 hours of play.

Altmaier is in a semi-final on the ATP tour in Kitzbühel for the first time since July 2021 – and for the fourth time ever. He had never reached the semi-finals in Halle before. In the duel for the final at the Terra Wortmann Open, the German will face the Canadian world number four Félix Auger-Aliassime, against whom he failed after five sets in the first round at the French Open, or the American Frances Tiafoe on Saturday.

“I’m super happy to have won here,” said Altmaier: “Incredible, something very special.”

Altmaier, who beat turf expert Hubert Hurkacz from Poland in the round of 16, also got off to a strong start against the 2021 US Open winner. With temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius, Medvedev, who had beaten Altmaier in the first round in Halle last year, improved and secured the second set in the tiebreak. In the third round, Altmaier had to take a medical break due to knee problems. But even the physical difficulties couldn’t stop him.

French Open winner Zverev had previously reached the semi-finals in a game of nerves. The Hamburger won against the Belgian qualifier Raphael Collignon 7:6 (12:10), 7:6 (7:2) and can still hope for the first lawn title of his career. The 29-year-old is now playing against US professional Taylor Fritz, against whom he has never looked particularly good recently. Zverev has been waiting for a win for two years, and he lost six times in a row.
