Bundesliga soccer team RB Leipzig has parted ways with Ole Werner. Now the future of sports director Marcel Schäfer also seems to be completely open.

According to “Sky”, it is currently unclear whether Marcel Schäfer will keep his position at RB Leipzig. Three scenarios are possible: resignation, dismissal or continuing as before.

The ex-professional is under contract with the Saxons until 2028. Most recently, “Bild” reported that Marcel Schäfer was actually on the side of the now-sacked Ole Werner in the coaching discussion. He is said to have even prevented the 38-year-old’s dismissal twice in recent months.

Ultimately, Werner’s future was not decided on Cottagweg, but at the global Red Bull headquarters. Jürgen Klopp, Head of Soccer at Red Bull, was one of the drivers behind the decision. On Tuesday, those responsible agreed to release him, and the trainer was informed on Wednesday. In addition to Ole Werner, his assistants Patrick Kohlmann and Tom Cichon also have to go.

There was a “crack” internally at RB Leipzig

When third in the table last season, Werner still had a contract until 2027. If the coaches’ contracts are not terminated, Leipzig will have to pay more than three million euros in salaries, according to Sky.

According to the TV station, there was a huge “crack” behind the scenes when the head coach was fired. Schäfer is dissatisfied with how the decision ultimately came about.

The 42-year-old has repeatedly been linked with a return to his former club VfL Wolfsburg in the past.

The “FAZ” also named him as a manager candidate at Eintracht Frankfurt if the collaboration with sports director Markus Krösche ends. The SGE recently denied rumors that Krösche would move to AC Milan.
