“It’s going to be warm today,” says RTV Drenthe weatherman Gert Voerman. “With temperatures of 27 or 28 degrees with a lot of sun.” Because of the heat, the KNMI issued a code yellow from 10 a.m.

The weather institute also takes the new term heat power into account. Four elements are combined into one number (0-10): temperature, humidity, wind and solar radiation.

“With today’s humid heat, the heat force is 7,” Voerman explains. “That means it feels stuffy outside the door.” It will remain warm for a long time tonight according to the weatherman. Then there is also a chance of a rain or thunderstorm locally.

In addition to code yellow, the National Heat Plan will also come into effect from 10 a.m. today. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) decided this after consultation with the KNMI. The chance that the warm weather will continue in the coming days plays an important role.

The heat can cause people to suffer from fatigue, headaches and concentration problems. But more serious health problems can also arise, such as dehydration or heat stroke.

Particularly vulnerable people such as the elderly and small children can have difficulty with the heat.

It doesn’t end after today. As mentioned, the heat continues. Voerman: “Tomorrow it will be very warm with high humidity.” According to the KNMI, we should take tomorrow into account the hottest day, temperatures could rise to 35 degrees.

Voerman expects the temperature to drop slightly over the weekend, but: “There is quite a bit of sun.” Looking ahead to next week: “It is still uncertain, but it is an option that the tropical air will return.”

Code yellow and the heat plan are in force until 7 a.m. on Saturday morning.
