Ghana’s star player Thomas Partey will not play in his country’s World Cup opener this coming night. The Canadian government did not approve Partey’s visa application because of the rape charges against him.
Seven charges of rape and one charge of sexual violence against four different women have been brought against Partey.
Editor of The Times Martyn Ziegler writes in communication service X that Ghana made a crucial mistake in the visa application.
– Court records show that Ghana has said “no” when asked if he has any pending criminal charges.
The Ghanaian government tried to get Partey a special permit to land quickly for the match, but the government’s appeal was rejected.
Partey, who played at Arsenal between 2020 and 2025, has denied all charges. His trial is scheduled to begin next week.
The match between Ghana and Panama will be played on the night between Wednesday and Thursday at 2 o’clock Finnish time.
