Ole Werner has to resign from RB Leipzig after just one season. Jürgen Klopp attests that the 38-year-old did a “great job”, but still justifies the separation.
On Wednesday afternoon, RB Leipzig confirmed their separation from Werner.
“Ole did a great job. We qualified for the Champions League. But we also have to look forward at the same time,” said Red Bull’s Global Head of Soccer Jürgen Klopp a few hours later on “MagentaTV”.
“We then thought about what it might look like given the burden that we were facing. Then they decided to make the change in Leipzig,” the 59-year-old summarized it.
According to consistent media reports, Martín Demichelis is considered the top candidate for the successor. “I’m not taking part in speculation now. Everything that needs to be said comes from Leipzig,” Klopp made clear. Demichelis is still under contract with RCD Mallorca.
RB Leipzig believes a “changed approach” is necessary
“We have analyzed the past season intensively and conclusively over the past few days. On Tuesday evening we made the decision to fill the position of head coach,” Leipzig’s sports director Marcel Schäfer said in an RB statement.
In addition to Werner, his assistant coaches Tom Cichon and Patrick Kohlmann at Cottaweg also have to go. “We would like to thank Ole, Tom and Patrick for their work and commitment at RB Leipzig. They played a large part in the successful transition and qualification for the Champions League,” said Schäfer.
“Nevertheless, we have come to the conclusion that further development of the content and a changed approach are necessary for the tasks that lie ahead of us,” said the Leipzig official.
