Bundesliga club RB Leipzig is parting ways with head coach Ole Werner after just one season. There should be a well-known successor.
Bundesliga club RB Leipzig has fired its coach Ole Werner with immediate effect. The club announced this on Wednesday. His assistant coaches Patrick Kohlmann and Tom Cichon also have to leave the club with him.
“We have come to the conclusion that further development of content and a changed approach are necessary for the tasks that lie ahead of us,” said Marcel Schäfer, Managing Director of Sports. The “Kicker” recently reported on concerns about the content and supposedly questionable communication. Werner’s relationship with Jürgen Klopp, Head of Global Soccer at RB, is said to have cooled noticeably.
As has only just become known, Leipzig’s sports director Marcel Schäfer saved Werner twice last season. Klopp and his team of experts with Mario Gomez, Jürgen Kramny, Peter Krawietz and Zsolt Löw discussed a change in the head coaching position several times due to the unconvincing style of play. But Schäfer prevailed.

Werner was actually under contract until 2027 and only took over the club last summer. With him, RB ended up in third place and thus qualified for the Champions League. If you take the points average of 1.95 points, Werner is one of the most successful coaches in the RB Bundesliga history. Even Ralf Rangnick (1.94/second term) and Julian Nagelsmann (1.94) couldn’t manage any more. After the XXL upheaval and the departures of Xavi Simons, Loïs Openda and Benjamin Sesko, Werner got 65 points and missed the club record from the first Bundesliga season with Ralph Hasenhüttl by just two points.
Werner’s reserved nature will probably be his downfall
At the end of the season there were setbacks with the 1:4 in Leverkusen and the 1:4 in Freiburg that did not fit into the picture of the demands. This was bitter and distorted the good picture of the season in the management team. There were discussions about Werner again.
